What is an independent fostering agency?

Fostering agencies

If you’re interested in becoming a foster carer you can either register directly with your local council’s Family Placement Service or with an independent fostering agency like Community Foster Care.

To follow either route you’ll need to go through in-depth assessment and training before being approved as a foster carer.

Independent fostering agencies

If you foster with an independent agency you’ll be more likely to:

  • get a lot of training and support

  • get a higher fostering allowance

  • foster children with more complex needs

  • foster groups of siblings

  • foster older children and teenagers.

If you’re only interested in fostering very young children (aged five years or younger) we can refer you to your local council fostering service.

Different types of independent foster care agencies

You might be surprised to know that many independent foster care agencies are private companies, with profits and shareholders. Others are non-profits and charities.

Community Foster Care is a charity. We do what we do simply because we believe that every we should be able to prioritise the best decision for the child and family, not the best decision for shareholders.
